What Sade Sati is
Saturn takes about twenty-nine and a half years to go once around the zodiac, which works out to roughly two and a half years in each sign. Sade Sati is the stretch when it passes through three particular signs: the one before your natal Moon, the one your Moon is in, and the one after. Three signs at two and a half years each — about seven and a half years, which is what the name means.
Two things follow immediately, and almost nobody says them out loud.
- It is counted from the Moon, not the Sun and not the ascendant. A calculator that asks only for your Sun sign is answering a different question.
- Everybody gets it. Saturn transits every sign for every person alive, so every one of us goes through Sade Sati three or four times in a long life. It is not a misfortune that was assigned to you personally.
The three phases are not the same thing
The tradition treats Sade Sati as three distinct two-and-a-half-year passages, not one long undifferentiated bad patch, and being told which one you are in is most of the useful information.
- Rising — Saturn in the twelfth from your Moon. The classical reading is expenditure, disturbed sleep, and things quietly ending. Read charitably, it is the phase of losing what was not load-bearing.
- Peak — Saturn on the Moon itself. This is the phase the entire reputation of Sade Sati rests on. The texts read it as pressure on the mind and the body rather than on circumstances, which is a meaningful distinction: the difficulty described is in how things are borne, not necessarily in what happens.
- Setting — Saturn in the second from your Moon. Family, speech, resources. Traditionally the phase where the ground firms up again, slowly.
Dhaiya, and why your dates never fit
There is a second Saturn period that gets confused with this one constantly. When Saturn transits the fourth or the eighth from your natal Moon, that is Dhaiya — also called Small Panoti, or Kantaka Shani in the fourth and Ashtama Shani in the eighth. Two and a half years each, not seven and a half.
This matters practically. A very common experience is being told Sade Sati is responsible for a hard year, checking the dates, and finding they do not line up — because the period you were actually in was Dhaiya. This page reports both, separately and labelled, so you can see which one the dates belong to.
Why our dates are different from the ones you were given
Most published Sade Sati tables are built from the average: Saturn spends about 895 days in a sign, so take an ingress date and add. That produces dates that are close and wrong, and it produces them confidently.
We scan Saturn's actual sidereal longitude across a hundred years, month by month, and bisect every sign-ingress down to the day. That is slower and it is correct.
There is a second wrinkle that catches naive scans. Saturn goes retrograde once every year, and it goes retrograde inside almost every sign it visits — which means it can cross a sign boundary forward, back, and forward again. Reported raw, one Sade Sati phase comes out looking like three separate periods with gaps in between. We absorb those short re-entries into the surrounding window, so what you see is the period as the tradition actually means it: one stretch, with a start and an end.
What this page will not do
It will not sell you anything, and it will not tell you what is going to happen.
Sade Sati is, with Kaal Sarp, the most heavily monetised idea in popular astrology. The pattern is familiar: name the period, sharpen the description, attach a fee. We are deliberately not in that trade, and it is worth saying that the sharpening is the dishonest part — the classical descriptions are about the character of a period, not a forecast of events, and they are considerably more measured than what gets repeated.
We also do not give a severity score. The tradition modifies Sade Sati by Saturn's own dignity in your chart, by the dasha running underneath it, and by the natal chart's general strength. Compressing that into one number would be inventing precision, and invented precision is the thing that makes a page feel authoritative while being worth less than silence.
Reading your own table
The result above lists every window of your life, with the type, the sign Saturn is in, and the dates. Read it in three passes.
- First, find where you are now. If nothing is running, that is worth knowing plainly.
- Second, look backwards. You have lived through the earlier windows already. Compare them against what your life was actually doing. That is the only honest test of whether this framework tells you anything, and it is a test you can run yourself, which is more than most astrology offers.
- Third, look forward, and hold it loosely. A date range is not a forecast.
How this is computed
Saturn's positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris, sidereal, Lahiri ayanamsa. Your natal Moon is computed for your birth moment at your birth coordinates, with the timezone offset that actually applied on that date — daylight saving included, computed rather than looked up in a fixed table.
The same function computes the Sade Sati table printed in our paid Life Kundali booklet. That is deliberate: a free answer that gave a family different dates from the one they paid for would be worse than no free answer at all.
Common questions
Is Sade Sati always bad?
The classical descriptions are severe in tone and they are descriptions of a period's character, not of outcomes. Saturn's traditional signification is time, weight, and things that must be done properly rather than quickly — which is difficult and is not the same as bad. Plenty of people build the most durable parts of their lives inside these windows.
I do not know my exact birth time. Does that matter here?
Less than for most things. Sade Sati is counted from the Moon, and the Moon changes sign only about every two and a half days — so unless your birth was within a few hours of a Moon sign change, an error of even a few hours in the recorded time will not move your windows. Our Moon sign calculator will tell you how close you are to that boundary.
Why does another site give me different dates?
Usually because it used average sign durations rather than the real ephemeris, or because it counted from your Sun sign instead of your Moon, or because it split one phase into three at Saturn's retrograde re-entries. All three produce plausible-looking tables.
Do you keep my birth details?
No. The details come in for the computation and are dropped when the answer goes back. No account, no email, nothing written anywhere — which is why there is no consent box on the form.
